Back in the glory days, Goble, Oregon was the southern terminus of a ferry that carried trains across the Columbia River. It is now a modest remnant of those glory days, but it does have the distinction of being home to the Goble Tavern. And being on HWY 30, it is also near the end of a bunch of roads that offer very nice driving opportunities. (Goble is only 10 miles or so from the Longview Bridge, so the trip home for Washingtonians is easier than you might otherwise think.)
This 70-mile excursion will have us beginning at North Plains (the Veterans Park that we use so regularly – gasoline, coffee and snacks are very available nearby), finding our way to HWY 30, over the wonderful Scappoose-Vernonia Highway, along HWY 47 to Apiary (bees and honey used to be important here), and to Goble. The Tavern does a pretty decent job with burgers, as I recall. Including a short side-trip to Vernonia Lake for pit stop purposes, the trip should take around 90 minutes. (Bring your walkie-talkies, including one to loan out if you have it. Thanks!)
