Weekend at Ocean Shores with CMNW

Weekend at Ocean Shores

See bottom of this page for event updates
Registration is required before Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 11:59 PM.

This will be a weekend drive to Ocean Shores, staying at the Shilo Inn in Ocean Shores, that will begin on Friday (St. Patrick's Day!) and run through Sunday. Club Miata Northwest did this beach weekend annually for four consecutive years leading up to the COVID outbreak. After a 2-year pause, they are ready to resurrect this always popular early-season event. We always have a great time hanging out with our friends from up North at this event. This will be a great way to meet and get to know your fellow Miata enthusiasts from the CMNW.

This event will consist of group drives to Ocean Shores Friday, as well as your choice of group drives on Saturday. One of the Saturday runs will be led by CMNW and the other will be led by MHMC. You are welcome to join either run group – regardless of your club affiliation. The Saturday runs are still being worked out. We will post details once they become available. In addition to the drive aspect, there will also be a social aspect to this event with many of our meals occurring in groups and lots of Miata chat in between.

Our weekend will begin Friday morning with me, Alex Countouriotis, leading our club on scenic run from our Kelso, WA starting point to our lunch rendezvous spot in Raymond. There, we will meet up with the CMNW group up who will be coming down from West Olympia and led by CMNW's President, Lou Kruse.

As in years past, both clubs will park in the gravel lot at the NE corner of Third and Duryea for group photos.

There are numerous places to eat lunch in Raymond. As in years past, I reserved a private room at the restaurant that is at the SW corner of Third and Duryea (kitty-corner from the gravel parking lot). It was formerly called Sheila's Kountry Kitchen, but the new owners renamed it Hungry Heifer Diner. Lou and I are happy to report that the food is every bit as good as it was under the previous owner. The private room can only hold about 30 people, so some of you may have to eat out in the main dining room. Of course, you're free to eat wherever you want in town or elsewhere. I only offer the Hungry Heifer Diner as an option for you to consider.

After lunch and group photos in Raymond, both clubs will head to Westport for a short rest stop and then continue from Westport to the Ocean Shores Shilo Inn. We should be in Ocean Shores around 3:30 or 4 PM.

There are numerous restaurants available in Ocean Shores for your dining pleasure. Because there is no longer a restaurant or bar at the Shilo, most socializing will have to take place offsite - unless any of you want to offer up your room as the official party room! Just kidding. Or am I?

Shilo Inn is setting aside a block of rooms on the top floor for us at $119 a night. You can choose from a single king ocean view room or a double queen ocean view room - either one is $119 and both offer great views!

Shilo will guarantee these rooms and this rate for us through 2023-03-09, but don't procrastinate. I only reserved 30 rooms for us and they are first come, first served. Please call the Ocean Shores Shilo Inn directly at 360-289-4600 to reserve your room. Be sure to let them know that you are with the "Miata Club" so that you can get the discounted group rate.

Please understand that you are not required to stay overnight in order to participate in this event. You are welcome to just drive out with us on Friday and head back whenever you want. Alternately (and this is an important note for those that have to work on Friday), you can skip the Friday group drive altogether and just show up on Saturday to join us on one of the runs that day.

I will post a similar event page on CMNW's website. Please do not sign up on both sites. Sign up there if you plan to come down from the North. If you prefer to drive up with my group from Kelso, please sign up here on our site. If you plan to skip Friday and join us in Ocean Shores on Saturday, you should still sign up here so that we will have your liability waiver for the weekend.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me (Alex Countouriotis) via email.

HOTEL AND RESTAURANT NOTE: As this is held on St Patrick's Day weekend, there is a Razor Clam festival that weekend, as well as most likely an Irish celebration at the Galway Pub.  Please plan your hotel reservations as soon as possible to accommodate that.

2023-01-30 Update: Two Saturday run options have been developed. Option 1 has Lou Kruse leading a spirited 2 1/2 hour long drive along several river roads in the area with a lunch stop during the final leg of the drive. Option 2 has me leading a more relaxed drive around Grays Harbor that stops in Westport for a visit to the Grays Harbor Lighthouse. The drive back will include a lunch stop in Aberdeen.

2023-02-04 Update: For Friday night’s dinner, I have reserved 30 seats at a nice Italian restaurant just a two-block walk from our hotel - La Spiaggia Ristorante. I am managing the guest list to ensure that we do not exceed the 30 seats that I have reserved. Only the first 30 people to email me and let me know that you want to join us for dinner will be seated with our group.

The chef at La Spiaggia Ristorante makes everything to order and from scratch, so please try to temper your expectations – this is not going to be a wham, bam, Olive Garden experience. They will begin seating our group at 5 pm, but it would be very helpful to the chef/staff if we try to stagger our arrival/ordering times across the 5 to 6 o-clock hour.

Don’t fret if you miss the boat on these 30 spots. There are plenty of other great food options in Ocean Shores and the surrounding area.

2023-02-06 Update:  All reserved seats at La Spiaggia Ristorante. are now spoken for.

2023-03-10 Update: Some updates for our Friday lunch stop in Raymond.

First the good news. The owner of the Hungry Heifer has graciously agreed to close down their entire restaurant to accommodate our large lunch group. She is even bringing in extra staff just for us! If you decide to eat at the Hungry Heifer (and I hope that you do), please let April (the owner) know how much you appreciate her doing this for us.

Now the bad news. The owner of the vacant lot at the Northwest corner of 3rd and Duryea that we usually take our group photos at has said, in no uncertain terms, that we are not allowed to use her lot for any purpose. So..., once our caravan gets to the intersection of 3rd and Duryea in Raymond, find street parking wherever you can. Please try to leave the primo spots in front of the restaurant open for those that have difficulty walking. Those that don't mind walking a few blocks can follow me to the Northwest Carriage Museum. Those that choose to follow me to the museum will be able to park there and take a short walk with me back to the restaurant. Museum staff gave us permission to use their parking lot that day. After lunch, I'll ask everyone to meet up at the Carriage Museum for our group photos. This is also where we will embark on the final leg of our journey to Ocean Shores.
