About this event
The 2024 Cemetery Crawl is scheduled for Saturday, October 26. This has been an annual event for most years in the past decade or more. Generally, it differs from more traditional runs in that
- Prizes are awarded for halloween-like accomplishments –
- The costuming of participants (uncostumed participants are welcomed too!)
- The costuming of cars (as with participants, cars may arrive undecorated and be fully welcomed)
- The costuming of antennae (or is it antennas?). Again, it’s OK to demur.
- Participants don’t drive in a column from Point A to the other points. Instead, directions are provided and participants get to those other points on their own or along with others as they choose. And since the course will be a loop and we’ll be driving it in both directions, we can count on waving at a bunch of Miatas driving in the other direction!
- Those other points noted in #2, above, include a number of pioneer cemeteries. We will be invited to find answers to questions about those cemeteries and their inhabitants.
- Lunch includes the awarding of prizes for stellar participant accomplishments.
This year’s Crawl will begin at Wilsonville’s Fred Meyer and will include visits to four graveyards in that general region. The course will be a loop and so will end where it begins. The McMenamins Wilsonville Old Church & Pub, also located adjacent to our starting point, has graciously agreed to provide us with a great lunch when the driving is done. (Gasoline, coffee, snacks and restrooms are easily accessible at or near the event’s starting point).
All in all, this is an interesting route with roads variously suited to everything from tight twisties to relaxed country driving. The course will encompass about 50 miles and will take about an hour to drive, plus the time required for cemetery visits.
(A logistical point: It may well be handy to have a walkie talkie on this run. And if you have a spare, please bring it along too.)
